The article “Consequence Assessment of Detonations in Explosive Material Handling Facilities: An Integrated Approach”, authored by Cristian Giovanniello, Luca Fiorentini, Andrea Respighi and Valentina Busini, has been published in the scientific journal *Chemical Engineering Transactions*; it was presented at the 12th CISAP International Conference (CISAP12).
The paper addresses a topic of great importance for industrial safety: the assessment of the consequences of accidental events in facilities that handle explosive materials. The authors propose an integrated approach that combines Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for the analysis of shock wave propagation with a Monte Carlo probabilistic model for the assessment of fragment projection. This methodology overcomes the limitations of traditional empirical models, offering a more accurate representation of accident scenarios based on the specific characteristics of the site.
The approach was applied to a real-world case study involving a storage facility for explosive materials, demonstrating how the integration of advanced numerical simulations and probabilistic models can significantly improve consequence analysis, providing a useful tool for the preparation of Safety Reports, land-use planning and risk management in establishments subject to the Seveso Directive.
This publication represents a significant scientific recognition of the work presented at CISAP12 and contributes to the development of innovative methodologies for quantitative risk analysis, with practical applications in the field of process safety and the prevention of major accidents.
