XVII AIIA – SFPE Conference “Sprinkler 4.0: the code of fire prevention and technological innovation”

Luca Fiorentini, director of TECSA Srl, participated as a speaker at the XVII National Conference organized by the Associazione Italiana di Ingegneria Antincendio (AIIA), the Italian chapter of the prestigious Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), which today has almost 5000 members internationally. The National Conference, held on October 3, 2017 at the “Rogers” hall of the Milan Polytechnic, saw the participation of a hundred Italian experts, including many AIIA members, and discussed the evolution of the legislation on sprinkler.

Luca Fiorentini, SFPE professional member and active at international level for the research and innovation activities of the association, led to the meeting, immediately after the intervention of the AIIA President Ing. Simone Sacco and the Commander of the Fire Brigade of Milan Ing. Gaetano Vallefuoco, the official greetings of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and in particular of President Paul Rivers and Technical Director Chris Jelenewicz. The intervention then showed the international activities of SFPE, the publications, the research activities in progress and the advantages for the members.

Later, in the afternoon, Luca Fiorentini then illustrated a case study concerning the impact of sprinkler extinguishing systems in the context of a real incidental event, that is the fire of the Norman Atlantic ferry. The intervention, prepared together with Ing. Rosario Sicari, head of the forensic engineering division of TECSA S.r.l. (MFCforensic), has shown the weight of fire protection systems on the evolution of the accident also in relation to the root causes of the event itself and its dynamics (explained, also graphically, by means of an RCA tree). It moves its steps from the activities that Fiorentini and Sicari, together with Prof. Bernardino Chiaia and Prof. Luca Marmo have carried out, as CTU of the Court, for the accident in the context of the probationary accident, taking care of the activities in-depth study and reconstruction of the fire on board and the measures and mitigation procedures implemented.

The slides of the two interventions will soon be made available online on the AIIA website.
