Presentation as part of the seminar “Lithium-ion Batteries: Between Prevention and Safety”

On February 27, 2026, Luca Fiorentini, Engineer, participated as a speaker at the seminar “Lithium-ion Batteries: Between Prevention and Safety.”

The event, organized by the Provincial Command of the Florence Fire Department, took place as part of the celebrations marking the 87th anniversary of the founding of the National Fire Department. Together with the second speaker, Engineer Marcello Gatto of the Fire Department Command, topics related to the safety of lithium-ion batteries in the automotive sector and in BESS storage applications were discussed, ranging from residential to industrial levels serving larger-scale storage facilities.

In addition to studying real-world cases of thermal runaway, the presentation outlined prevention and containment measures, including safety management during emergencies and urgent technical rescue operations. The presentation also introduced the fundamental concepts for modeling events from a numerical calculation perspective to support fire engineering methods, using appropriate tools derived from the field of industrial risk assessment, which may be integrated with numerical codes more specific to fire prevention.
