With the aim of recovering end-of-life plastic polymers, an Italian waste management company requested a quantitative risk analysis for its treatment plant, using a structured methodology developed for industrial facilities that produce, process, store and transfer liquid and/or gaseous hydrocarbons.
This analytical approach made it possible to:
- identify the centres of danger (the processes, storage and transfer of hazardous substances);
- characterise the source terms (counting leak items, hole sizes, types of substances released, etc.);
- estimate the frequency of occurrence of accident scenarios resulting from releases (event tree analysis – ETA);
- model the effects resulting from releases (fires, dispersion of flammable substances, etc.)
- determine the damage distances to which these effects apply.
