QUANTITATIVE RISK ANALYSIS FOR A WASTE MANAGEMENT PLANT

2025 / Industrial risk analysis / Industries

With the aim of recovering end-of-life plastic polymers, an Italian waste management company requested a quantitative risk analysis for its treatment plant, using a structured methodology developed for industrial facilities that produce, process, store and transfer liquid and/or gaseous hydrocarbons.

This analytical approach made it possible to:

  • identify the centres of danger (the processes, storage and transfer of hazardous substances);
  • characterise the source terms (counting leak items, hole sizes, types of substances released, etc.);
  • estimate the frequency of occurrence of accident scenarios resulting from releases (event tree analysis – ETA);
  • model the effects resulting from releases (fires, dispersion of flammable substances, etc.)
  • determine the damage distances to which these effects apply.
